Over the weekend at the Sydney Writers’ Festival, high-profile political journalist Laura Tingle told the audience Australia is a racist country, and always has been. It prompted widespread media coverage and criticism from Coalition politicians and media commentators.
But is it true? Is Australia fundamentally a racist country?
We asked five experts what they think. Here’s what they had to say.

What is racism
Racism is the process by which systems and policies, actions and attitudes create inequitable opportunities and outcomes for people based on race. Racism is more than just prejudice in thought or action. It occurs when this prejudice – whether individual or institutional – is accompanied by the power to discriminate against, oppress or limit the rights of others.

Adam Goodes was a champion AFL footballer and Indigenous leader. In the final three years of his playing career he became a lightning rod for a heated public debate and widespread media commentary that divided the nation. He publicly called out racism, was named Australian of the Year, was accused of staging for free kicks, and performed an on-field war dance celebration. The cheers became boos as football crowds turned on him. Using only archival footage aired at the time, the film holds a mirror to Australia and is an opportunity to reconsider what happened on and off the football field.

The Victorian Government has developed a state-wide anti-racism strategy to proactively prevent and address racism in Victoria. Established in June 2021 and convened by the Minister for Multicultural Affairs and the Minister for Treaty and First Peoples, the Anti-Racism Taskforce provides strategic advice and recommendations to ensure the anti-racism strategy sets out and delivers and delivers a clear and targeted roadmap to reduce racism and discrimination in Victoria.

Racism. It Stops With Me is a national anti-racism campaign of the Australian Human Rights Commission. It is one of many campaigns and initiatives working to increase awareness of racism, and equip more Australians with tools to address it.
